When I arrived in Germany 11 years ago I was surprised to see the tiny kitchen refrigerators and the small quantities purchased at the super market but with time I came to realize that unlike Americans, Europeans have a tendency to shop not on a weekly basis but rather daily.
Why would this be I wondered. My best guess would be that culturally this has been the case for most families for generations (a large proportion of stay at home mothers) and secondly most European cities have at least one if not several fresh markets selling fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, exotic produce and everything in between where people purchase the ingredients for their meals on a daily basis. I have come to really like this way of shopping and the fact that often Europeans bring along their own bags, boxes or shopping carts to carry their goods home. Fresh food and environmentally conscious shopping is always a nice feeling.

Since I bought my first Brigette Magazine back in 2002 and discovered Car Möbel, the German producer of wood and metal furniture and accessories, I have always thought of them as a great find. Updated : Drosselmeyer Nutcracker
The Swedish firm Drosselmeyer has created a modern update to an old standard - the nutcracker.
Nutcrackers usually employ similar design and therefore also present the user with similar problems. Shells and crumbs flying around, almonds that refuse to get cracked, and the ever-present danger of getting your fingers squeezed off.
Drosselmeyer is designed to fit all kinds of nuts. Smaller ones, such as almonds and hazel nuts, end up at the bottom of the cone and crack easily with the force of the double lever. Larger nuts, such as walnuts and Brazil nuts end up in top of the cone and Drosselmeyer makes cracking these open an easy job as well.

Turkish Reflection : Gaio & Gino Pepper and Salt Mills
Ah, something different than the standard pepper mill. Karim Rashid’s Salt and Pepper mills for the Turkish design brand Gaio & Gino.
The metal tops are inspired by the Ottoman taps and the base parts from the alems, the crescent that is usually placed at the peak of a mosque dome. The family consists of Ottoman (father), Ottowoman (mother) and Ottokid (child). These pepper and salt mills are made in Italy.
The bodies are handmade (ivory white or light pink) lacquered European beech wood. Top metal shapes are laser cut, high quality solid brass. Top parts are sterling silver and 24 carat gold plated and have undergone a protective anti-oxidation treatment to preserve shine. The grinder mechanisms for peppermills are stainless steel. The grinder mechanisms for salt mills are ceramic. Contrary to most pepper grinders, the grinders do not crush but actually cut peppercorns to achieve maximum flavor.

As I was perusing the web today I came across 2 inventive product designs.
Want an artistic “coffee ring”? The “Stamp Cups” by Valeria Miglioli and Barnaby Barford help you create a little piece of art out of your coffee spill. Two cups made of ceramic, one with a leaf and one with a swirl motif match up so that you can create a continuous pattern.
Ther Brooklyn, New York based designer, Alissia Melka Teichroew, has designed this clever party plate. The ceramic plate is folded to fit perfectly in your hand and allows you to keep the plate in one hand while eating your food with the other.

Modern Eating : Tonfisk Design
Tonfisk Design of Finland founded 1999, launching their first products in 2000 at the Ambiente Exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany, are now servicing the world with a variety of tableware designs. The Maku range, as pictured above, includes 3 sizes of wooden plates and 3 sizes of ceramic dishes, which work together in a modular fashion. The ceramic pieces are oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. The wood pieces are walnut veneer with a natural oil coating for protection.

What you get is a neat ABS storage case with a non-slip base and four color coded chopping boards.
