This oversized lounger is filled with expanded polystyrene pellets that are much more comfortable than the original “beans” of yesteryear and is available in 18 contemporary colors. Car Moebel Chair Choices
Since I bought my first Brigette Magazine back in 2002 and discovered Car Möbel, the German producer of wood and metal furniture and accessories, I have always thought of them as a great find. Car Möbel has been producing furniture for over 45 years and in the last 5 years they have expanded their collection and updated their website making Car Möbel an even better resource.
Today I would like to show a small selection of their wooden chairs. Car Möbel carries 35 different styles of chairs with up to 3 options for seats (upholstered or 2 types of weave). The prices are extremely reasonable and since each chair can be purchased in unfinished wood then you can customize the look of the chair to fit your decor.

Emeco Chairs 77 Steps
Iconic, in a word. Emeco chairs began in 1944 with a collaboration between Emeco and ALCOA, the largest American producer of aluminum, to develop a seaworthy chair for military use. The collaboration between ALCOA’s scientists, Naval engineers and Emeco resulted in the production of the now classic Navy Chair. The Navy Chair was produced in Emeco’s Hanover, Pennsylvania workshops where all of their chair collections are still made today. Each chair is built individually by a handful of craftsmen in a a unique 77-step process.
Since this time Emeco has partnered with many designers, the most well known being Philippe Starck, who designed the Hudson chair, created and named for Ian Schrager’s Hudson Hotel in Manhattan. All of Emeco’s chairs are made from 80% recycled aluminum which has been thermally treated. Three times stronger than steel and amazingly light weight, these chairs have a life expectancy of at least 150 years. Emeco believes in the quality of it’s product, so much so, that Emeco will replace them (a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser) that all chairs and stools be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and conditions for life! All chairs are available in brushed and polished finishes.

Vitra Slow Chair
The Slow chair designed in 2007 by French brothers, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra, is made by using an extremely strong, precisely shaped knit which is stretched over the metal frame like a fitted stocking. “The translucent sling cover replaces the thick cushions of traditional armchairs, resulting in a design that is lightweight, yet generously proportioned.”
The appeal of the Slow Chair for me is its generously proportioned width to make for a comfortable sitting experience and the design lines that hark back to Danish retro with a definite contemporary twist. Comes in a variety of soft, muted colors like dove grey, salmon pink or charcoal black. If the price were not so steep I would definitely put this on my “to buy” list.

Thinner by Tobias Berneth
Thinner, designed by German born Tobias Berneth for the Swedish firm Karl Andersson & Sons, is a table with slender, elegant dimensions. Thinner comes in four heights of 400, 480, 730 and 900 mm, and in 12 different sizes of table. The tabletop is 6 mm thick and is made in veneers of oak, birch, walnut and white laminate, as well as in black-stained oak. Heirloom Child Furniture
If you are looking for children’s furniture that is not made of plastic or coming in garish colors then Heirloom of Sweden has produced a line of miniature adult pieces called ‘Retro‘. The price is steep but the concept is that you can pass the furniture down through the generations.
All the pieces are crafted entirely by hand, using classic craft techniques such as dovetailing and traditional materials such as jute, horsehair, wadding and cotton fabric. The Georg floor lamp was created by Patricia Trambevski at Belid and the furniture was designed by Catharina Engelholm for children between the ages of two and six. I am a fan of miniatures for the pieces can easily blend into one’s existing interior. I am so lovin’ the Bror sideboard.
Heirloom will also carry the ‘A Series‘ designed by furniture designers Sanna Lindström and Matilda Lindblom from LL Lindblom Lindström Design. Currently not available for purchase but definitely worth a peek.

Practical Beauty : Avilar Bench Coffee Table
A practical and sophisticated solution - the Bench coffee table by Avilar.
The Italian company Alivar was established in 1984, offering design classics through its ‘Museum Collection’. Alivar gained its reputation as the only company offering a full range of historic pieces by such designers as : Alvar Aalto, Eileen Gray, Eero Saarinen, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, George Nelson to name but a few. In 1994, Alivar with the help of the architect Giuseppe Bavuso, created 2 of it’s own collections of furniture entitled: Home Project and Brilliant Furniture.
The Bench coffee table comes in oak or in glossy laquered wood with two side drawers. A rectangular version (126l x 86w x 19h cm) is also manufactured.

Dutch Classic : 1930’s Gispen Chairs
A collection of chairs by Dutch designer W.H. Gispen that I adore. Most of the designs were done in the early 1930’s where he was the first to start the mass production of tubular steel furniture in the Netherlands. Gispen was a first among his breed to be a designer and a manufacturer at the same time. To read a full history of W.H. The Gispen 405 was designed in 1933 and features the original characteristic straight armrests. The Gispen 412 chair design dates from 1934 and is the best-known armchair in the Gispen collection. The Gispen 101 was designed in 1931 and is the first of the two sprung-steel chairs without back legs. The Gispen 407 was designed in 1935 and features armrests with upturned ends, as seen in the 412 design.
