Sarah Grove and Annette Bugansky

Vases

Stunning porcelain vases and cups with the look of “sumptuous upholstery, textured fabric, and pearl and knit designs” are the creation of two very talented ceramic artists.

Sarah Grove enjoys the juxtaposition “between the soft pillow forms of the fabric and the cold unyielding nature of the porcelain.” A former fashion and costume designer, Annette Bugansky, approach to ceramics has been influenced by her professional background. What I find so unique to their work is that the textural quality of the pieces makes me want to take hold and really feel them. Lovely.

Sarah Grove Porcelain - 62 to 138 euro
Annette Bugansky Porcelain - 30 to 165 euro

Pia Baastrup Porcelain

Pia Baastrup Porcelain

Pia Baastrup, a self-taught ceramic artist from Denmark, has the most lovely and fragile looking porcelain tableware collection. Pia starts all of her designs by folding paper until new shapes and models take shape. Once a piece is conceptualized with paper she then rolls the porcelain into thin plates, cuts them to size and marks, bends or folds the porcelain until she has assembled the pieces into cups, bowels, plates or dishes.

Each pieces is made by hand without moulds. The technique is 3 to 4 times more time-consuming than if casts or a wheel are used. The colours are white and celadon, and the models are made in different, stackable sizes. Pia Baastrup’s workshop is located in Copenhagen, Denmark, since 2003.

Do it Yourself Pillow Making Resources

Pillow Making Instruction Books

Want to freshen up your decor with pillows but can’t seem to find that perfect cushion? Well, maybe you could sew your own. It really is not as hard you might think. The first sewing project I ever did was a simple knife-edge pillow at the age of 11 on my little mini sewing machine, given to me as a Christmas present. I really cherished that pillow for years because I had created it on my own. Sourcing how-to books, patterns and fabric is a breeze with the internet. Here are some of my favorite choices.

Book One: The Pillow Book
The Pillow Book written by Shannon Okey, also the voice behind the blog knitgirl.com, and photographed beautifully by Gemma Comas is a real delight containing 25 simple to sew patterns, with step-by-step directions and a front pocket containing the sewing patterns.

Book Two: Handcrafted Pillows
Linda Neubauer and Joanne Wawra’s Handcrafted Pillows: Sew And Embellish Pillows In The Decorator Looks You Love provides a set of some thirty projects achieved using five basic sewing styles. I think the layout and the instructions were really thorough and straight forward, great for the beginner.

Book Three: The Sewing Edges and Corners Book
Another book I think would be great to have is The Sewing Edges and Corners book written by Linda Lee. This book details how to sew corners, piping, flanges and bands on the edges of your pillows giving them that extra professional touch.

The Pillow Book - Through Amazon - $17
Handcrafted Pillows - Through Amazon - $28
The Sewing Edges and Corners - Through Amazon - $13.50

Amy Butler

Amy Butler offers several free patterns, such as the Hourglass Pillow project, which can be downloaded in pdf format. If you are looking for Amy Butler fabrics here in Europe you can visit Still Water Designs, selling several of her fabric designs by the meter. For an American fabric resource my favorite shop would be PurlSoho.

Hourglass Pillow Pattern - Free
Midwest Mod Pillow Pattern Book - $13
Amy Butler Fabrics - 1 meter - 16 euro

DaWanda EduBrasilEtsy FabricCloset

Also Etsy and DaWanda are good resources when you are looking for fabric. Often you do not need to buy a whole meter or you can buy several pieces at one reasonable price. Here are just two of the many sellers that I found: Etsy - FabricCloset and on DaWanda: EduBrasil.

NähSucht Blog
For my German readers, see this post regarding tariffs for shipping fabric from the USA to Europe on the beautiful blog Nähsucht (Addicted to Sewing) by one very, very talented crafter. The blog is in English and German but the post regarding tariffs is in German only.

Expert Village Video Tutorials
Also you can check online for video tutorials for crafting your own pillows, one nice resource is Expert Village and the series How To Make Pillows.

Katy Jung Porcelain

Jung Porcelain

I stumbled upon Jung Porzellan while looking through DaWanda this morning and I am glad I did. I really like the shapes she has created, a real feeling of solidity she has given the porcelain pieces. I particularly like the salt and pepper shakers with their little red rubber stoppers, they made me feel happy for some reason.

Katy Jung, the Berlin based designer behind Jung Porzellan, believes in a hands on experience as each step in the process is carried out completely by hand. A video of her process can be seen here. Well worth a view!

Etsy : PataPri Textile

PataPri TextilePataPri Textile

If you been reading my posts you know I am a huge fan of the various methods of printed media whether it be letterpress, silkscreen or digital. With the indie movement reviving the art of both letterpress and silkscreen the amazing variety of available products is boundless.

Today I would like to highlight PataPri Textile from Chicago, Illinois. The silkscreen printed textiles are a real delight - beautiful patterns with bold, happy colors. The multitalented Japanese graphic designer, textile designer and silkscreener “PataPri” prints her textiles at the Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago.

The Etsy shop of PataPri Textile has an ever changing product line since the products are handcrafted and produced in limited runs. Products include pillow covers, dishtowels, tablecloths, bedding and fabric sold by the meter, so that you can make your own pillows, bedding or whatever you may dream up. PataPri Textile Flickr photostream shows various patterns and prints she has made and the actual process of silkscreening as I have shown here. When purchasing a handmade indie product I think the real delight is in knowing how your product was made and who made it, that personalization brings an extra layer to the feeling you have a real treasure at hand.

Be sure to check out the blog of PataPri to see her extraordinary work.

Handmade Nation Documentary Coming 2009

Handmade Nation Documentary

Finally a documentary regarding the ever growing D.I.Y. movement that is sweeping the USA, Europe and the world at large. Faythe Levine recorded over 80 hours of video in 2006 and is currently in post production with an expected release date of 2009.

The film documents the rise of indie design, craft and art. I am hoping the documentary has the impact of informing the general public to be more aware that indie design is available and will prompt people to seek out artists and portals where they can purchase products, support the artists and spread the love.

Handmade Nation has a blog and offers a monthly raffle in support of their production. Check it out.

Screen Prints

Silkscreen PrintsSilkscreen PrintsSilkscreen PostersSilkscreen PrintsSilkscreen Prints

Screenprinting involves creating a stencil on a taunt piece of fabric and pushing one ink color through at a time. Due to the nature of the medium the prints often have minor variations and unlike slick glossy posters from standard offset printing the silk screen inks create a tactile texture to the poster. Often screenprinted posters are printed in limited numbers thus making them a collectible or at the very least a unique piece you won’t find hanging on someone else’s wall.

Hand pulled prints are categorized into intaglio prints, (including etching and aquatint, engraving, drypoint, and mezzotint), serigraphs (silk screens), relief prints, (wood block prints, linoleum prints) and planographic prints, (stone and plate lithographs).

Posters shown are appoximately 46 x 61 cm but each company has dozens of posters in a variety of sizes and prices.

The Bird Machine - $20 to $50
Patent Pending Press - $30 to $50
Large Mammal - $20 to $100

Designer Love : blue ant studio Posters

blue ant studio Postersblue ant studio Posters

If you are a lover of classic designer furniture then you should check out blue ant studio based in Miami, Florida for their collection of vector drawn posters. The ‘Chair Exam’ poster is a clever reinterpretation of the standard eye chart but with a collection of classic designer chairs. Can you spot the Emeco Navy chair or the Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair or better yet how many can you identify? This would make a perfect gift for the design aficionado in your life.

Another hip poster would be the ‘Alphabet of Design Classics’ poster, one of my favorite letters would be the letter ‘I’ for Isamu Noguchi Coffee Table. Blue ant studio also does single designer classic posters such as the ‘Side Eames LCW’ as pictured above, top right.

To round out their collection would be the fantasy assembled ‘NYC Subway Sign’. It is only available as a digital vector file, due to it’s length (2.28 meters long x 27.5 cm wide) but then you can resize it yourself if need be and have it printed locally by a foil maker in your area.
