Sarah Grove and Annette Bugansky

Vases

Stunning porcelain vases and cups with the look of “sumptuous upholstery, textured fabric, and pearl and knit designs” are the creation of two very talented ceramic artists.

Sarah Grove enjoys the juxtaposition “between the soft pillow forms of the fabric and the cold unyielding nature of the porcelain.” A former fashion and costume designer, Annette Bugansky, approach to ceramics has been influenced by her professional background. What I find so unique to their work is that the textural quality of the pieces makes me want to take hold and really feel them. Lovely.

Sarah Grove Porcelain - 62 to 138 euro
Annette Bugansky Porcelain - 30 to 165 euro

I love the irreverent design by Jude and Sam, the founders of SuckUK in Britain, always a clever take on an everyday item. The MyCuppa Tea / Coffee Cup has color bar markings for the various shades of milk that you can add to your cup of coffee or tea. Practical and funny.

Pia Baastrup Porcelain

Pia Baastrup Porcelain

Pia Baastrup, a self-taught ceramic artist from Denmark, has the most lovely and fragile looking porcelain tableware collection. Pia starts all of her designs by folding paper until new shapes and models take shape. Once a piece is conceptualized with paper she then rolls the porcelain into thin plates, cuts them to size and marks, bends or folds the porcelain until she has assembled the pieces into cups, bowels, plates or dishes.

Each pieces is made by hand without moulds. The technique is 3 to 4 times more time-consuming than if casts or a wheel are used. The colours are white and celadon, and the models are made in different, stackable sizes. Pia Baastrup’s workshop is located in Copenhagen, Denmark, since 2003.

Katy Jung Porcelain

Jung Porcelain

Jung Porcelain

I stumbled upon Jung Porzellan while looking through DaWanda this morning and I am glad I did. I really like the shapes she has created, a real feeling of solidity she has given the porcelain pieces. I particularly like the salt and pepper shakers with their little red rubber stoppers, they made me feel happy for some reason.

Katy Jung, the Berlin based designer behind Jung Porzellan, believes in a hands on experience as each step in the process is carried out completely by hand. A video of her process can be seen here. Well worth a view!

Tristan Zimmermann Phonofone II

Tristan Zimmermann Phonofone II

What is the Phonofone you ask? In short, it’s like a speaker for your iPod, only it uses no power. Through passive amplification alone, these unique pieces instantly transform any personal music player + earbuds into a sculptural audio console.

Without the use of external power or batteries, the Phonofone II inventively exploits the virtues of horn acoustics to boost the audio output of standard earphones to up to 55 decibels. Now let’s make this clear, 55 decibels is not going to entertain your party, but it’s fine for the office or next to the bed or for a dinner party. But honestly, if you want to get a great sounding set of speakers that you can crank up and rock out to, get a set of Bose. The Phonofone II is constructed entirely out of ceramic.

Phonofone II - 28 x 25 x 51 cm - 350 euro
