Emeco Chairs 77 Steps
Iconic, in a word. Emeco chairs began in 1944 with a collaboration between Emeco and ALCOA, the largest American producer of aluminum, to develop a seaworthy chair for military use. The collaboration between ALCOA’s scientists, Naval engineers and Emeco resulted in the production of the now classic Navy Chair. The Navy Chair was produced in Emeco’s Hanover, Pennsylvania workshops where all of their chair collections are still made today. Each chair is built individually by a handful of craftsmen in a a unique 77-step process.
Since this time Emeco has partnered with many designers, the most well known being Philippe Starck, who designed the Hudson chair, created and named for Ian Schrager’s Hudson Hotel in Manhattan. All of Emeco’s chairs are made from 80% recycled aluminum which has been thermally treated. Three times stronger than steel and amazingly light weight, these chairs have a life expectancy of at least 150 years. Emeco believes in the quality of it’s product, so much so, that Emeco will replace them (a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser) that all chairs and stools be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal use and conditions for life! All chairs are available in brushed and polished finishes.

Katy Jung Porcelain
I stumbled upon Jung Porzellan while looking through DaWanda this morning and I am glad I did. I really like the shapes she has created, a real feeling of solidity she has given the porcelain pieces. I particularly like the salt and pepper shakers with their little red rubber stoppers, they made me feel happy for some reason.
Katy Jung, the Berlin based designer behind Jung Porzellan, believes in a hands on experience as each step in the process is carried out completely by hand. A video of her process can be seen here. Well worth a view!

Popptalk Handmade - May 2008 Showcase
I am a little late getting this out but this month Poppytalk Handmade is running “Paper Pops! A Papergoods & Affordable Art Market & Showcase”. The market showcase running from May 12th to June 6th is highlighting paper related products and as you know I love paper!
If you are unfamiliar with the Poppytalk Handmade concept it is “a monthly online street market curated by Poppytalk to showcase, buy and sell handmade goods of emerging design talent from around the world.” Each participant can showcase up to 12 products, go into detail about their work and sell directly to you through their own shops. Looking for a little privacy but do not want to hang curtains? Well window film or foil can be a fantastic alternative because the price is much cheaper, the foils can be easily mounted and removed and you can update the foils as your interior changes with little fuss. I have searched around and found some really pretty choices available across Europe.
If none of these choices suit you or your needs then you might want to check your local telephone directory for a foil service. Another way to locate a foil service and someone to mount the foils is to stop in a shop that have foils mounted in a window (such as “SALE”, etc…) and inquire who mounted them. Often mounting services will arrange the entire service for you from helping you with your designs, having them cut and finally mounting them at your location.
Cocobohème has a lovely collection of 4 patterns for glass. Unlike most foils, where there is an adhesive backing that sticks to the surface, the Cocoboheme foils work on an electrostatic principle and can be easily mounted and removed with just a little water.

The Slow chair designed in 2007 by French brothers, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra, is made by using an extremely strong, precisely shaped knit which is stretched over the metal frame like a fitted stocking. “The translucent sling cover replaces the thick cushions of traditional armchairs, resulting in a design that is lightweight, yet generously proportioned.”
The appeal of the Slow Chair for me is its generously proportioned width to make for a comfortable sitting experience and the design lines that hark back to Danish retro with a definite contemporary twist. Comes in a variety of soft, muted colors like dove grey, salmon pink or charcoal black. If the price were not so steep I would definitely put this on my “to buy” list.

If you been reading my posts you know I am a huge fan of the various methods of printed media whether it be letterpress, silkscreen or digital. With the indie movement reviving the art of both letterpress and silkscreen the amazing variety of available products is boundless.
Today I would like to highlight PataPri Textile from Chicago, Illinois. The silkscreen printed textiles are a real delight - beautiful patterns with bold, happy colors. The multitalented Japanese graphic designer, textile designer and silkscreener “PataPri” prints her textiles at the Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago.
The Etsy shop of PataPri Textile has an ever changing product line since the products are handcrafted and produced in limited runs. Products include pillow covers, dishtowels, tablecloths, bedding and fabric sold by the meter, so that you can make your own pillows, bedding or whatever you may dream up. PataPri Textile Flickr photostream shows various patterns and prints she has made and the actual process of silkscreening as I have shown here. When purchasing a handmade indie product I think the real delight is in knowing how your product was made and who made it, that personalization brings an extra layer to the feeling you have a real treasure at hand.

Danish designer Anne Black has a series of porcelain that is just sublime - such understated elegance. All the pieces are hand crafted in her Copenhagen workshop and each piece, distinctive for its shape, is decorated with a number of different graphical perforations, decals, hand paintings or a combination of these applied designs. Since the inception of the line in 2001 the products can be increasingly found in interior design stores, museum shops & fashion retail throughout Europe, South East Asia and the United States.
